Our time at Caprock Canyon State Park had come an end. On our way out of the park we stopped at the Visitor’s Center to hand in the Jr. Ranger packets, but our dismay, it was closed for lunch. The kids had worked hard on their packets and we didn’t want to deprive them of their badge, so we decided to circle back and go for some lunch of our own. At the edge of the park there was a BBQ stand that was only open on Fridays and Saturdays. Yay! It was Friday!
As we were walking in, we struck up a friendly conversation with a man about the storms we experienced last night. He was staying in the Ranger’s lodge and said he saw smoke from two of the neighboring ranches and he suspected that they had fires from the lightning. When he mentioned the lightning I had to show him the picture I took which captured a bolt in action. He smiled and said, he has always enjoyed watching the storms roll in. Curious, I asked him if he comes here often. That’s when he told me that he was the first park ranger here!

It’s been 2 weeks since we arrived back in Dallas after our inaugural trip with the trailer. I apologize for not posting sooner, but the chaos of readying a house to sell and a trailer to live in while working and minding the kids got the better of me. In addition, this month is an emotional one as we prepare to leave our jobs and our beloved neighborhood. Those challenges aside we are excited for the adventure ahead and are so grateful for the encouragement y’all have been.

I heard those words over and over again on our accent of Kilimanjaro. Polepole is Swahili, translated to English it means slowly, softly, be calm. Our guides would tell us over and over again “polepole”. Take it slowly, just one step at a time. Don’t get overwhelmed by what lays ahead. Be here, in this moment.
Years later I find myself repeating those words to myself. “Just go softly Brad, one step at a time. Don’t be overwhelmed by what lays ahead”. I feel like I’m out on the mountain again, looking out over what lays ahead. So much unknown. So much new and foreign. And yet here I stand, wanting to step out into that unknown.
